UN: Uzbekistan strengthens traditional system of self-government

Uzbekistan handed over its presidency in the Islamic Cooperation Organization to Côte d'Ivoire. A ceremony devoted to this was held last week at the UN headquarters. Uzbekistan`s Permanent representative held a briefing on the topic: "Mahalla is a unique civil society institution in Uzbekistan", UN news center said.

An information about “mahalla” was circulated as an official document of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly.

"In the framework of the implementation of the concept "From the strong state — to strong civil society", the role of mahalla is enshrined in more than one hundred legal acts", - the document says. According to the information contained therein, some 10 thousand active citizens` gatherings successfully implement more than 30 socially and economically important tasks that were previously included in the competence of public authorities.

The leadership of Uzbekistan believes that the mahalla should become an even more effective structure, a "real assistant to the Uzbek people", an institution where people can express their opinion, present proposals, speak about their problems.
