The Oxford English Dictionary chose the word of the year 2021
The Oxford English Dictionary has selected the word for the year 2021. The word of the year is "vaccine" or "vaccination." The Oxford lexicographers recognized the word as "particularly outstanding." They note that the word was quite rare in the Oxford Dictionary corpus until 2021. By September 2021, it was 72 times more common than at the same time in 2020.
The word vax, which won this year's Oxford Dictionary, was first recorded in English in 1799, and its derivatives vaccinate and vaccination first appeared in 1800.
In 2020, the Oxford Dictionary was unable to select one word of the year. The word "coronavirus" and related phenomena of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as lockdown, social distancing, furlough (wage compensation for those out of work because of the coronavirus crisis) and the acronym WFH (work from home) were leading in the frequency of use.
