Freedom of speech in Uzbekistan: key challenges and solutions

The 4th International Media Forum “Point of Unity,” dedicated to World Press Freedom Day, was held at the initiative of the National Media Association of Uzbekistan. The forum focused on the progress made in ensuring freedom of speech in all forms of media—TV, internet, and print—since the country gained independence. Speakers discussed the future of media content, current changes in the information space, the protection of journalists' rights, and the impact of artificial intelligence on the media industry.

The forum also addressed Uzbekistan’s position in international press freedom rankings. It was noted that, according to the 2025 annual report by the international organization "Reporters Without Borders," Uzbekistan ranked 148th—unchanged from the previous year. Sherzodkhon Kudratkhodja, Chairman of the National Media Association of Uzbekistan, commented on the ranking. He emphasized that such assessments should consider the country’s regional context and other relevant factors.

Dilshod Saidzhanov, First Deputy Director of the Agency for Information and Mass Communications (AICMC), spoke at the event about efforts to ensure freedom of speech. He noted that the number of media outlets is growing each year. According to him, this growth is possible only when proper conditions are created in the media market.

The second part of the forum featured panel sessions where participants discussed the ongoing development of the media environment and the importance of quality, objectivity, and innovation in building audience trust.

At the end of the forum, practical recommendations were made to remove obstacles to freedom of speech and help the media adapt to the digital age.
