ACWA Power plans launch 400 MW of wind turbines

In Bukhara, ACWA Power is constructing two wind power plants with a capacity of 500 MW each. The project, using 6.5 MW turbines from Envision, began in July 2023 in the Peshku and Gijduvan districts. Currently, 73 out of 158 turbines have been installed, totaling 474.5 MW.

The first stage of the power plants, producing 400 MW, is expected to be operational by the end of this year. These plants will provide energy to residents of Karakalpakstan, Khorezm, Bukhara, and Navoi regions. Once fully operational, the wind farms will generate up to 3.6 billion kWh of electricity annually, saving 1.1 billion cubic meters of gas and reducing atmospheric emissions by 1.5 million tons.

As part of the project, 260 km of high-voltage power lines and two 500 kV distribution stations will be built, enhancing the reliability of the power grid connection between the north-west and south-west regions.

ACWA Power secured funding from international organizations for the project, including $520 million from the EBRD and its partners for wind farm construction, $47 million for power lines, and an additional $174 million from the ADB.

ACWA Power is also involved in other energy projects in Uzbekistan. They are currently working on two wind farms in Karakalpakstan, with one expected to be the largest in Central Asia, boasting a capacity of 1.5 GW. Additionally, they are investing in solar power plants in Tashkent and Samarkand, thermal power plants in the Syrdarya region, and a green hydrogen plant in Chirchik.
