Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to build two hydroelectric power stations

Uzbekistan and Tajikistan continue to discuss the draft Intergovernmental Agreement on the procedure and conditions for shared participation in the construction and operation of hydropower plants in the Zarafshan River basin, the Ministry of Energy said.

"Two hydropower plants in the Zarafshan river basin will produce up to 1,400 million kilowatt-hours of ecological clean electricity exclusively for the needs of Uzbekistan," the statement said.

Hydroelectric power plants will provide support for the peak load capacity of the unified energy system and electricity flows to other regions of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan on a parity basis.

First, it is planned to build the Yavan hydroelectric station with an estimated cost of $ 282 million, a capacity of 140 megawatts and generation of 700-800 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, and then a second hydroelectric station will be built on the Fandarya river with an estimated cost of $ 270 million, a capacity of 135 megawatts and generation 500-600 million kilowatt-hours of electricity.

The project will be financed from borrowed and grant funds of international financial organizations, as well as own funds of the parties.
