Russian President Putin stresses importance of UN, UN Charter at General Assembly

Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the importance of the United Nations (UN) and abiding by the UN Charter in a pre-recorded video address to the general debate of the 75th anniversary session of the United Nations General Assembly that was held on Tuesday.

Speaking in the video, Putin said that the United Nations is fulfilling its mission and safeguarding the world peace despite the upheaval of geopolitics and complicate world politics.

"In an interrelated, interdependent world, amid the whirlpool of discords in the international affairs, we need to work together drawing on the principles and norms of international law enshrined in the UN Charter," said Putin.

Putin also said that the COVID-19 pandemic has a huge social and economic impact, and it will take a long time to restore the global economy.

The only way to elaborate on such solutions is to work together, which is the most important task for both the UN and G20 States, he said.

Russia also supports the World Health Organization (WHO) to play its role in fight against the pandemic, said Putin.

Putin said that the issue of primary importance that should and must be promptly dealt with for Russia is, of course, the extension of the Russia-U.S. Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, and Russia is discussing it with the United States about it.

Russia announced to stop deploying ground-launched medium and short-range missiles in Europe and other regions. However, U.S. has yet taken similar actions.

"I would like to add that as early as last year, Russia declared a moratorium on deploying ground-launched medium and short-range missiles in Europe and other regions as long as the United States refrains from such actions. Unfortunately, we have not received any reaction to our proposal from either our U.S. partners or their allies," said Putin.
