Kazakhstan begins construction of new railway link to Uzbekistan
Kazakhstan started the construction of a new railway line connecting to Uzbekistan. The railway, named Darbaza-Maktaaral, will span a total distance of 152 kilometers. This was announced by the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Alikhan Smailov.
The purpose of this new railway is to ease the burden on the "Saryagash" station, which is the main hub for transporting goods from Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan. Currently, the station is operating at its maximum capacity and struggling to handle the increasing amount of cargo. Prime Minister Smailov stated that by the end of 2023, the volume of cargo traffic between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan is expected to reach around 31 million tons, which is a 16% increase compared to the previous year.
The construction of the railway aims to improve transportation capacity and boost Kazakhstan's potential for exporting and transit. Experts from Kazakhstan, Temir Zholy, the national railway company, estimate that the project will increase the flow of cargo to Uzbekistan by 10–14 million tonnes annually.
