Uzbekistan Criminalizes Illegal Water Connections for Profit

Illegal connections to drinking water networks for profit are now subject to criminal liability in Uzbekistan. The head of the information service at "Uzsuvtaminot" JSC, Akmal Murodov, shared this information at a briefing in AOKA.

Damages in the realm of drinking water supply and sewage disposal are compensated under Article 52 of the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On Drinking Water Supply and Wastewater Disposal."

Theft, as outlined in paragraphs "d" and "e" of the second part of Article 169 of the Criminal Code, involves arbitrary connection to public water supply networks for commercial purposes or intentional damage to cold water meters. This includes tampering with meters from the outside to alter readings.

Perpetrators can face penalties, including fines up to three hundred times the base calculation, correctional labor lasting two to three years, or restrictions of liberty lasting three to five years. In two cases, individuals have been criminally charged, with measures taken to impose sentences ranging from 1 to 3 years of deprivation of liberty.
