Champions of World Chess Olympiad solemnly welcomed in Tashkent

Champions of the World Chess Olympiad in their homeland. Let's remember how the tournament was held, name the heroes-triumphants, and find out what prizes were awarded to the winners

No matter how much you talk about the talented youth of Uzbekistan, it's not enough. Our young guys, who became champions of the 44th World Chess Olympiad in the city of Chennai, India, won among 188 teams from around the world, certainly increased the fame and authority of Uzbekistan throughout the world, demonstrating their high intellectual potential and professional skills.

How it unfolds? 

The national team of Uzbekistan was one of the youngest teams of the tournament. In the final round of the World Chess Olympiad, Uzbekistan defeated the Netherlands team and became the winner of the tournament. In the decisive match, Jahongir Vakhidov defeated his opponent and brought the first ever gold medal of the Olympiad for the national team.

The men's team of Uzbekistan in the 11th round of the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai (India) defeated the Dutch team and became the champion of the tournament. The match, which took place on August 9, ended with a score of 2.5:1.5.

The national team of Uzbekistan, following the results of 11 rounds, took first place in the standings with 19 points and remained the only team without defeats. The second place was taken by the Armenian team (19 points), and the third by India-2 (18 points).

The last time Uzbekistan won an Olympic medal was in 1992. Then the team consisting of Valery Loginov, Grigory Serper, Alexander Nenashev, Sergey Zagrebelny, Mikhail Saltaev and Saidali Yuldashev became the silver medalist of the tournament in Manila (Philippines).

In December 2018, the national team of Uzbekistan also won first place at the World Chess Olympiad among juniors under 16 for the first time. Then Nodirbek Abdusattarov, Shamsiddin Vohidov, Sitora Saparova, Zhavokhir Sindarov and Nodirbek Yakubboev represented the country at the championship.

Meeting of Champions

Our champions, accompanied by mentors, arrived at the Tashkent airport at 3:00, where they were met by relatives, friends, coaches, journalists and bloggers to the sounds of karnay and surnay, as well as applause. Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov, the mayor of the capital, and other responsible persons also came to the airport to congratulate the victors of the world chess event.

Heroes who adequately represented Uzbekistan at the Olympiad and brought victory: Jahongir Vakhidov, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Nodirbek Yakubboev, Javokhir Sindarov, Shamsiddin Vohidov, as well as Afruz Khamdamov, Maftuna Bobomurodova, Nilufar Yakubboeva, Umida Omonova, Marzhona Malikova.

It is noteworthy that these energetic, smart and at the same time reserved guys secured the right to host the 46th World Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan in 2026.

Their merits and skills were appreciated by the government of Uzbekistan, in the form of a cash reward in the amount of 600 million soums and keys to Equinox cars. Also, the coaches of the national team received 300 million soums.

In addition, by decree of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the winners and participants of the Olympiad will be awarded honorary titles and medals:
