Mozart's handwritten musical scores among hundreds of manuscripts to be auctioned in Paris

More than 900 manuscripts, including a score by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a letter from Vincent Van Gogh, are to be sold in Paris in a series of seven auctions starting from Saturday (June 16).

The auctions are an attempt to liquidate a 130,000-strong collection of artworks and literary treasures pulled together by Aristophil, a group set up in 1990 that raised funds from some 18,000 investors in exchange for a share in the pieces.

Aristophil went bankrupt in 2015, causing losses for its backers, while founder Gerard Lheritier was detained and put under investigation for fraud, a charge he denies.

The sale of the first part of the collection took place on December 20, 2017.

This series contains precious musical scores handwritten by Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Bach. Scores by Beethoven and Bach are estimated to fetch between 150,000 and 200,000 euros ($177.000 and $236.000) while Mozart's is estimated between 120,000 and 150,000 euros ($141.000 and $177.000).

Among the hundreds of other items are a letter from Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh to his friend Anthon Van Rappard estimated at between 250,000 and 300,000 euros ($294.000 to $353.000) and a collection of love letters from French writer Paul Eluard to his wife Gala.

The overall sale is expected to fetch 15 million euros.
