Uzbekistan proposes 2027 as “International Year of Sustainable and Resilient tourism”

Uzbekistan proposed to declare 2027 as the “International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism”. Over 80 member countries supported the resolution with experts from various nations, including Russia, China, the US, Turkey, Germany and others. The resolution, based on President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's remarks at a UNWTO session in 2023, highlights the role of tourism in preserving cultural heritage, promoting peace, and respecting diverse values.

The resolution focuses on developing "green" tourism to protect the environment, biodiversity, and reduce pollution.  This initiative calls for comprehensive measures by the UN World Tourism Organization, governments, and regional bodies to ensure the successful implementation of the International Year. It stresses the importance of sustainable tourism, including ecotourism, to achieve economic growth, rural development, and poverty alleviation, while promoting the participation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

The UN World Tourism Organization is tasked with reporting on the resolution's implementation at the 83rd session of the UN General Assembly in 2028. Experts believe this initiative will elevate the global tourism industry to new heights.
