Uzbekistan channels over half a million towards pilgrimage tourism, eyes 1.7mn foreign tourists in 2021

In a bid to promote pilgrimage tourism abroad, the Uzbek government has allocated over $576,000 this year, deputy prime minister Aziz Abdukhakimov told a press conference on April 28. He said that the country was increasingly improving transport logistics.

"We are having intensive negotiations with the government organizations of Islamic nations, such as Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia and Pakistan. They are requesting to improve the transport logistics, making the flight costs affordable. And most importantly, all the necessary services are being introduced, like Halal, Kosher and Vegan standards. And Uzbekistan`s entrepreneurs have the responsibility of offering decent services in accordance with those standards", noted Abdukhakimov.

"There are 784 Islamic, 19 Christian, and eight Buddhist cultural heritage sites in Uzbekistan. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the total volume of tourist services will be around $130mn this year.”, he added.

The Uzbek government has set a goal to attract at least 1.7mn foreign tourists and 7.5mn domestic tourists to the country by the end of 2021.
