Uzbekistan has officially nominated its candidacy for the chairmanship of the UN World Tourism Organization’s European Commission for the 2025–2027 term. This marks the country’s first bid for the position.
Minister of Ecology Aziz Abdukhakimov and Chairman of the Tourism Committee Umid Shadiev met with foreign diplomats in Tashkent to present and discuss the nomination. The initiative reflects international recognition of Uzbekistan’s tourism reforms and its efforts to strengthen regional cooperation and promote sustainable development in the sector. As Chair, Uzbekistan aims to advance initiatives on positioning Central Asia as a unified tourism destination, developing cross-border routes, adopting digital tools, and deepening regional coordination within UNWTO. For reference, the European Commission of the UNWTO includes 41 countries from Europe, Central and Western Asia. The election will take place during its 71st session, scheduled for June 4–6, 2025, in Baku, Azerbaijan.
