Uzbekistan turns from "seller” into “buyer” of gas
Russian gas giant Gazprom GAZP.MM has suspended the procurement of gas from Uzbekistan and began its sale to the ex-Soviet republic in 2020 and the first quarter of this year, according to Gazprom's eurobond prospectus unveiled on June 22.
Gazprom has said domestic consumption in Uzbekistan was on the rise and that it supplied the country with 1.5bn cubic metres (bcm) of gas in January - March.
"The Central Asian countries are developing very rapidly. First of all, this applies to Uzbekistan. And we are seeing a big increase in consumption in this country. Therefore, of course, to one degree or another, gas purchases are reduced, because the state directs gas to its own needs, if we are talking about Uzbekistan," said Yelena Burmistrova, Deputy Chair of Gazprom Management Board.
Uzbekistan delivered 3.8 bcm of gas to Gazprom in 2018, increasing its supplies to 4.9 bcm in 2019. Already in 2020, the Central Asian state bought 0.9 bcm of gas from Gazprom.
Gazprom also noted that it needs additional gas volumes from third parties to fulfil its contractual obligations.
It bought 4.7 bcm of gas from Turkmenistan in 2020 and 2.2 bcm in the first quarter
