Government to re-consider IMEI fee as petition receives enough votes

Uzbek citizens are forced to pay the fee for registration of mobile devices. A corresponding decree was adopted last year. Even though the tax size is not big, if to add up all devices available in the country a huge amount can be revealed. The payment is made for each IMEI code. The web-portal Mening fikrim, which allows citizens to send petitions, has said that some citizens intend to abolish the tax and have submitted a corresponding appeal. The author of the petition urges to simplify the procedure for registering mobile devices and cancel the fee.

So far, the petition has received more than 13,000 votes, while some 170 users have left their comments. According to the legislation, the Parliament must consider the appeal if the petition gets 10 thousand votes.

The system of mandatory registration of mobile devices using IMEI was launched in April 2020. Initially, devices were registered for free in automatic mode. Then the service became on a paid basis, with its fee comprising around $5. According to the authorities, the registration allows finding stolen devices and identifying devices that have not passed customs clearance. In addition, this system can help protect the population from devices that are considered unsafe for health.
