Child Protection Concerns Rise in Uzbekistan

In the last three years, over 2,000 people in Uzbekistan lost their parental rights.

In 2021, there were 1,831 criminal cases involving minors, and this number rose to 2,194 in 2022, as reported in the draft law on protecting children from violence by the Ministry of Justice.

In 2021, 334 cases involving the sexual freedom of children were investigated, and this increased to 395 cases in 2022, making up 18% of all crimes against minors.

During the past three years, courts deprived 2,072 individuals of their parental rights. Among them, 1,777, or 86%, willingly relinquished their parental responsibilities, while 23 individuals were found to have abused their parental rights through cruelty, force, or psychological manipulation.

Currently, more than 1,500 children receive education and care in orphanages and foster families. These children face a high risk of violence, which goes against international standards and children's rights requirements.
