Uzbekistan Faces Water Crisis by 2050
The Senate Committee on Agrarian and Water Management, in collaboration with the Ministry of Water Management, convened a conference on "Introduction of innovative technologies in water management: problems and solutions." During the conference, it was highlighted that the water deficit in Uzbekistan may escalate to 15 billion m3 by 2030. This projection stems from the anticipated decrease in water resources, with estimates indicating a reduction in the Syrdarya basin and 15% in the Amudarya basin by 2050. The discussion underscored the necessity of enhancing the efficiency of scientific research endeavors and widespread adoption of innovative technologies in the water industry.
Additionally, attention was drawn to the challenges posed by global climate change, including diminished snowfall and rainfall, declining water levels in glaciers and river basins, and issues surrounding transboundary water usage within the republic. These factors have led to a 20% reduction in the average annual utilization of water resources compared to the allocated intake limit. In the economic sectors, agriculture accounts for 90% of water usage, followed by industry, heat energy, utilities, fisheries, and other industries. Progress was noted in 2023 towards achieving objectives outlined in presidential decrees and decisions concerning water management development.
