Uzbekistan meets Sergei Denisenko, who conquered Mt Everest
With about one death for every 10 successful ascents, the world`s highest peak, Everest, has recently been conquered by an Uzbek alpinist for the first time from the Nepalese side of Himalayas.
Sergey Denisenko raised the national flag of the country dedicating his achievement to Uzbekistan`s 30th anniversary.
A solemn meeting of Sergei Denisenko was held at the Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport. It was followed by an award ceremony held at the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, on Monday.
The athlete was awarded the honorary title "O'zbekiston iftixori" - Pride of Uzbekistan, along with the special presidential gift - Chevrolet Trailblazer. Alpinists from Uzbekistan first climbed Everest in 1998, when Ilyas Tukhvatullin and Andrey Zaikin climbed to the summit.
