Artist Olafur Eliasson launches sun-powered lamp to help millions without electricity

Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson on Wednesday (September 20) launched the third version of his portable "Little Sun" lamp with all the profits used to try to reach the millions of people around the world still living without electricity.

Among Eliasson's best known works are "The New York City Waterfalls" in which big waterfalls were created all over Manhattan in 2008 and "Ice Watch," when large blocks of ice from Greenland were left to melt during the 2015 Paris climate conference.

He has also been exhibited at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art MoMA) and he chose the museum's design store to launch the latest version of his "Little Sun".

The Little Sun is a portable solar lamp and the third version is made of recycled material and when fully charged can give over five hours of bright light, fading to long-lasting soft light.

According to the Little Sun Foundation, 1,1 billion people around the world live without access to the electrical grid. One of the effects of this is that children cannot study after the sun sets.

In addition to providing light, the "Little Sun" also contributes to eliminating unhealthy smoke from fire or petroleum lamps.
