GM shows off self-driving cars it plans to roll out soon as a ride service

General Motors on Tuesday (November 28) showed off the self-driving cars it plans to roll out soon as a ride service.

The presentation to the media was the first time that GM and its self-driving unit, Cruise Automation, allowed non-employees to ride in its cars, which have been seen in recent months testing on roads in San Francisco, Phoenix and Detroit.

"We've talked about having this technology ready to deploy safely, at scale, in the most complex urban environment and being ready to do that in quarters not years," said GM president Dan Ammann.

Major automakers like GM, technology giants like Alphabet and top suppliers like Intel Corp have poured billions into the highly competitive autonomous vehicle sector although carmakers have yet to figure out how to make money on the cars. Yet to be seen is who will be the first to deploy a reliable and wide-reaching robo-taxi service, considered the main use case for self-driving vehicles due to their high cost.

GM's acquisition of Cruise, once a tiny start-up, for a reported $1 billion last year jolted the industry and ushered in a frenzied wave of acquisitions in the space.
