Residents of Uzbekistan's forest regions benefit from FAO projects

The FAO Representative Office in Uzbekistan in cooperation with the State Forestry Committee are implementing Global Environment Facility (GEF) project "Sustainable forest management in mountain and valley areas of Uzbekistan".

The project aims at stable maintenance of target dynamics that ensure continuous, non-exhausting multi-purpose forest management, conservation and improvement of forest productivity, sustainability and biodiversity.

The work is being carried out on 4 demonstration sites representing various types of forest ecosystems in Uzbekistan-Syrdarya, Dehkanabad, Kitab and Papal state forests.

"The FAO Representative Office in Uzbekistan organized a series of trainings, during which we gained knowledge and skills on planting seedlings of Tianshan spruce, fast-growing tree species for fuel wood and medicinal plants. We learned how to grow seedlings of ornamental plants in a greenhouse, " says Abdurakhim Khudaiberganov, who lives in the Pap district of Namangan region. – As for non-wood resources of the forest, training sessions were organized on processing local raw materials-wool. Women have gained experience in the manufacture of wool blankets, which has had a beneficial effect on their employment and additional income."
