Uzbekistan registers its first coronavirus vaccine

The Uzbek authorities said on Monday that they have registered a vaccine against a new type of coronavirus manufactured by the Chinese company Anhui Zhifei Loncom Biofharmaceutical. The Center for Advanced Technologies under the Ministry and the Research Institute of Virology are now conducting phase III clinical trials of the vaccine.

"Given the active participation of the Ministry of Innovative Development and the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan in trials of this vaccine, as well as their contribution to clinical research, Uzbekistan was recognized as a co-author of the vaccine. The vaccine will be sold in the country under the name ZF-UZ-VAK 2001,"- the Ministry of Innovative development said.

Uzbekistan has also recently certified Russian Sputnik V vaccine for its mass use in the country. Russian Ambassador to Uzbekistan Vladimir Tyurdenev said that Russia would supply one million doses of the vaccine for labor migrants to the republic. A contract for the supply of the second Russian vaccine, EpiVacCorona, is to be signed in 2021.

Only 20% of the Uzbek population is set to undergo vaccination due to the fact that it is voluntary.

According to Uzbek officials, the first stage of the mass vaccination campaign will cover 4.1mn people, and deputies proposed to vaccinate elderly and disabled persons, employees of the healthcare and education systems, as well as members of law enforcement bodies first.
