Uzbekistan`s Muruntau recognized as world`s biggest gold mine

Muruntau, located in Uzbekistan`s Navoi region has been affirmed as the world`s biggest mine, according to a rating compiled by the Kitco analytical center. When compiling the list, experts used official data from companies and rough estimates of mines that keep their data confidential.

“The Muruntau mining complex, located in Uzbekistan and consisting of open-pit mine and heap leach operations, is estimated to have produced slightly more than 2mn ounces of gold in 2020. Operated by state-owned Navoi company, the mine is more than 3.3km long, 2.5km wide nearly 600m deep. Considering the stunning resource base, estimated in excess of 150 million ounces, Muruntau will likely keep its title as the world's biggest gold mine in the nearest future”, the ranking says.

The top 10 also includes Carlin mine in the U.S., Olimpiada of Russia, Pueblo Viejo in the Dominican Republic and Grasberg in Indonesia.
