The US plans to give Afghan planes to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in exchange for assistance in the fight against terrorism
The US authorities are negotiating the transfer of 46 Afghan military aircraft of the former Afghan government to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. In return, the United States wants to enlist help in the fight against terrorists in Afghanistan, Politico reports.
"The plan is to transfer a certain number of aircraft to the governments of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in exchange for an informal agreement on deepening our security relations in terms of border protection and counterterrorism," the publication says. Among them are C—208 aircraft, A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft, Mi-17, Mi-25 and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.
In August 2021, during the days of the capture of Kabul by the Taliban, Afghan pilots fled to neighbouring countries. After that, the interim Government of Afghanistan repeatedly insisted that these aircraft are the property of the country. However, the Uzbek authorities stated that the planes and helicopters are the property of the United States and cannot be returned.
According to the interlocutor of Politico, the United States plans to evaluate the equipment to make sure that it can be used for flights.
