Samarkand to launch third tram route and acquire 14 modern trams

Samarkand plans to open a third tram route from the railway station to the Chemicals' Fort and purchase 14 modern tram cars for this route. Practical work is underway in cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Currently, the Tram Line Operation Directorate of the Samarkand Regional Transport Department operates 20 tramcars on two routes: from the Railway Station to Sartepa Square and from the Railway Station to Siyob Bazaar. In 2023, Samarkand became the first city to join the EBRD's "Green Cities" program. During the annual meeting of the bank's board of directors held in Samarkand, an agreement was signed between the government of Uzbekistan and the EBRD to provide a sovereign loan of up to $49 million to launch electric bus services in the city. Tram services have been running in Samarkand since 2017.
