Syrdarya river dries up

The Syrdarya River, a significant part of the Aral Sea Basin, reported as drying up. The river is crucial for hydroelectric power during winter and for agricultural purposes in downstream areas of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. Videos of the drying river gone viral on Uzbek social media platforms.

The agriculture sector is the largest water consumer in the region, employing a significant portion of the workforce and contributing significantly to the gross domestic product of each country. However, water diversions for irrigation have resulted in severe problems with water scarcity in downstream areas of the Syrdarya Basin near the Aral Sea. It is urgent to address the environmental damage and economic depression caused by water scarcity in these areas by improving water quality and increasing water quantity to meet the population's basic needs.
