Tashkent reports lowest school attendance rate in Uzbekistan

Tashkent has the lowest school attendance rate in Uzbekistan, the Institute for Macroeconomic and Regional Research reports. The average attendance rate in the country decreased from 82.5% last year to 83.8% in 2022. 

In terms of regions, Tashkent, Jizzakh, and Fergana regions have the lowest attendance rates, with Tashkent having the lowest at 57.8%. On the other hand, Bukhara, Surkhandarya, and Kashkadarya have the highest attendance rates, with Bukhara having the highest at 89.1%.

The report also highlights the subjects with the lowest attendance rates among different grade levels. Primary school students have low attendance rates in Uzbek language and mathematics lessons, while secondary school students struggle with Uzbek language, informatics, literature, and English lessons.

The survey conducted among parents revealed that illness was the main reason for students missing classes. Helping parents with work was the second most common reason. Other reasons for being absent included taking care of children under 6 years old in the family, attending tutoring sessions, and lack of funds to attend schools.
