Uzbekistan denies sugar price increase

Uzbekistan's Agriculture Ministry has denied that the increase in sugar prices is due to possible restrictions on sugar exports from Russia. The ministry stated that domestic production capacities in Uzbekistan are sufficient to meet the country's needs.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture sugar enterprises, Angren Shakar and Khorezm Shakar, have an annual production capacity of over 900,000 tonnes. This exceeds the domestic market requirements. The annual demand for sugar in Uzbekistan ranges from 650,000 to 700,000 tonnes. The ministry emphasized that the restriction on sugar exports by Russia will not result in a shortage in Uzbekistan's domestic market. Furthermore, the country's large sugar factories are not reliant on Russia, and in 2023, the majority of raw materials were imported from Brazil and India, totaling 762,000 tonnes. Additionally, the two sugar factories in Uzbekistan currently have a four-month supply of sugar and sugar raw materials, with ongoing imports from Brazil. On a daily basis, the factories offer 2,100 tonnes of products on the exchange, but only around 300 tonnes are sold on average.
