Uzbekistan receives first batch of Sputnik V

Uzbekistan on Friday received the first batch of the Sputnik V vaccine. The delivery was carried out with the assistance of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF).

Sputnik V, developed by the Russian Scientific Center named after N. F. Gamalei, was certified and approved for mass use in Uzbekistan in mid-February. The certification process began only after receiving the necessary materials from the developers, in particular, the results of the third stage of clinical trials of the vaccine.

Half of the cost of the entire purchased volume of Sputnik V was financed by entrepreneur Alisher Usmanov.

Uzbekistan plans to vaccinate about 4 million citizens against COVID-19 in April-June. By the end of 2021, that number could rise to 7 million, or about 20 percent of the country's population.
