Uzbekistan to monitor water reservoir dams with radar technology for earthquake resistance
The Cabinet of Ministers has decided to implement a system for permanent radar space monitoring of the seismic resistance of water reservoir dams. This means that the movement and subsidence of dams will now be monitored by the Uzbekspace agency.
The results of this monitoring will be integrated into an electronic platform called “Performance of Seismological Observations in Water Reservoirs”. This platform will gather critical information, including the current condition of existing dams, their displacement and subsidence indicators, seismic strength, and emergency risk levels. To ensure ongoing oversight, a “Commission for the Study of Space Monitoring of Earthquake Resistance of Reservoir Dams” will be established.
Constantly monitoring the strength of reservoir dams is crucial for assessing their deformation-stress state. Dams are vulnerable to earthquakes when under stress and deformation, increasing the likelihood of damage during emergencies at their weakest points.
These measures will allow for continuous evaluation of the strength and functionality of water reservoir dams, enabling early analysis of potential emergency situations and identifying possible shifts.
