The dire consequences of water mismanagement are evident, with the economy suffering an annual revenue loss of $5 billion
In Uzbekistan, the distribution of water resources poses a significant challenge, as only 20% of these resources lie within the country's territory, while the rest are located in neighboring states. Climate change further exacerbates the situation, leading to a steady decrease in available water sources year after year. Managing transboundary rivers remains a complex issue, adding to the overall water scarcity concerns.
Forecasts indicate that by 2030, Uzbekistan could face a water shortage of up to 15 billion cubic meters, emphasizing the pressing need for action. Surprisingly, even in such challenging conditions, water is being used inefficiently, with a staggering 90% of water resources being consumed by the agricultural sector. For instance, irrigating just one hectare of cotton fields requires an excessive amount of 10–11 thousand cubic meters of water annually, while countries with similar climates and soil manage with 2-3 times less water through effective water management practices.
The head of state has emphasized that the upcoming year will be a crucial period for transitioning to an emergency mode of operation to conserve water. One of the primary tasks is the concreting of canals and ditches to prevent water loss. Currently, an alarming average of 14 billion cubic meters, or 36% of water, is lost each year in natural cover irrigation systems, resulting in no economic benefit. The regions most affected by these losses include the Republic of Karakalpakstan, Namangan, Navoi, Khorezm, and Bukhara.
The dire consequences of water mismanagement are evident, with the economy suffering an annual revenue loss of $5 billion. Addressing these challenges requires immediate action to conserve water resources, enhance water management practices, and ensure efficient water distribution, particularly to the areas facing the most severe water supply difficulties.
