As the sun began to rise in the Dutch city of Roermond on Saturday, parts remained submerged in floodwaters following heavy rain which has battered Western Europe. Fueled by days of adverse weather, floodwaters left thousands of people homeless across Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands after their dwellings were destroyed or deemed to be at risk.
In the southern Dutch province of Limburg, where Roermond is located, troops piled sandbags on Friday to strengthen a 1.1-kilometer (0.7 mile) stretch of dike along the Maas River, and police helped evacuate low-lying neighborhoods. Caretaker Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the government was officially declaring flooded regions disaster areas, making businesses and residents eligible for compensation.
The World Meteorological Organization said some parts of Western Europe have received up to two months of rainfall in the space of two days.
