Japan's new prime minister to continue Abe's policy, boost digital economy

Japan's new elected prime minister Yoshihide Suga, who is also the new leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, is expected to push ahead with the policies of his predecessor, Shinzo Abe, while also implement his own reforms on sectors like digital economy.

The parliament formally chose Suga as the new prime minister in an extraordinary session on Wednesday.

Suga was elected by both chambers of parliament, winning 314 votes in the 465-member lower house and 142 votes in the 245-member upper house.

The new prime minister is expected to form a Cabinet filled with ministers who served under Abe. Nobuo Kishi, Abe's younger adoptive brother, will inherit the defense minister portfolio.

Suga's immediate focus is expected to be reviving the battered economy while keeping the COVID-19 epidemic under control.

Takuya Hirai, a former minister for information technology policy under Abe, will take the role of digital minister and is expected to bring new reforms, regulations and investment into the country's digital economy so as to boost Japan's lagging digital transformation.
