Queen Elizabeth commissions UK's biggest warship

The biggest warship ever built in Britain, the 65,000-tonne HMS Queen Elizabeth, was officially commissioned into the Royal Navy Fleet in its home port of Portsmouth on Thursday (December 7) by the queen who shares its name.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth told the ceremony, which was held on the aircraft carrier's huge hangar deck, that it was the "most powerful and capable" vessel to raise the White Ensign - the flag that flies on Royal Navy ships.

It took eight years to build HMS Queen Elizabeth and along with its sister ship, HMS Prince of Wales, it is part of a defence programme worth 6 billion pounds ($7.65 billion), with building and fitting spread over six different shipyards across Britain.

It measures 280 metres and can travel 500 miles a day.

The ceremony was held in Portsmouth, where it arrived in August of this year after a two-month sail from Scotland's Rosyth dockyard where the warship was built.

British Finance Minister Philip Hammond and British Defence Minister Gavin Williamson were there to view the HMS Queen Elizabeth joining the fleet, as well as the warship's Commanding officer Captain Jerry Kyd.

The warship currently can't deploy planes but flying trials are due to begin next year.
