WHO announces daily record in number of cases of COVID-19

The global number of confirmed COVID-19 cases exceeded 8.7 million as of Sunday night, with over 461,000 fatalities, said the World Health Organization (WHO) on Sunday.

The global caseload of COVID-19 rose to 8,708,008, including 461,715 deaths, according to WHO.

The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States topped 2.27 million on Sunday, as a host of U.S. states have seen a sharp climb of cases in recent days.

The number of confirmed cases reached 2,275,319 as of 00:22 GMT Monday, with 119,959 deaths, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

Several U.S. states, including Florida, South Carolina, Missouri, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Montana, have seen an uptick in COVID-19 cases as businesses continue to resume operations across the nation, casting a shadow over the current path to reopening.

More than 30,000 new infections were reported across the nation on both days of the weekend, indicating a nationwide rise in COVID-19 cases, despite a downward trend in over 10 states including New York and New Jersey.

Brazil's death toll from COVID-19 climbed to 50,617 after 641 patients died in the previous 24 hours, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.

Over the same period, tests detected 17,459 new cases of infection, raising the total to 1,085,038.
