Uzbekistan replaces internal biometric passports with national ID cards

Uzbekistan has initiated a procedure to replace internal biometric passports with national ID cards, the Interior Ministry reported.

ID cards are issued primarily to citizens reaching 16 years, to citizens who lost their passports or whose passports expired, as well as to those willing to change their names or ethnicity until December 31, 2022.

Starting in 2023, the replacement of biometric passports with ID cards will become mandatory.

The ID cards will be valid for 10 years and can be used only on the territory of Uzbekistan. The replacement procedure will last until 1 January 2030.
