Uzbekistan honors WWII heroes on day of Memory and Honor

May 9 is the Day of Memory and Honor. Every year on this day, the victims of World War II are remembered, and the status of veterans is reported. A flower-laying ceremony was held at the "Matonat Madhiyasi" memorial complex in Victory Park, Almazar district of Tashkent. The complex was built in memory of Zulfiya Zakirova, who lost five of her sons in the war.

Representatives of the Senate Committee on Defense and Security Issues, experts from the Committee, and representatives from the Ministries of Defense and Internal Affairs, as well as the Customs Institute, attended the event. Flowers were laid at the memorial complex to the sound of the orchestra.

Senator Kutbiddin Burkhanov stated that the number of soldiers sent from Uzbekistan to the front lines and died during World War II has been underestimated until now.

A seminar was held at the “Honor and Pride” Museum in the “National Park” on the topic: “Honoring the participants of World War II and those who selflessly worked behind the front is one of the priorities of social policy.” The event paid tribute to national heroes who showed great courage during the war and demonstrated dedication through honest labor behind the front lines. Speakers highlighted that it is the duty of today’s generation to honor the veterans who survived intense battles and endured difficult times with patience and resilience.

It was also noted that Uzbekistan welcomed nearly 1.5 million people who had lost their homes, parents, and relatives, treating them as their own. The Uzbek people played a vital role not only on the battlefield but also by supporting the war effort with military equipment, weapons, medicine, clothing, and food.

The seminar discussed efforts to trace more than 158,000 people who went missing during the war and to determine their fate. At the end of the event, several participants who presented reports were awarded certificates by the Senate of the Oliy Majlis.
