Lawyer turned Lego artist builds superheroes out of more than 2 million bricks

Tired of Wall Street, American lawyer Nathan Sawaya turned to lego and built a new life as an artist.

His exhibition, "Art of the Brick" featuring DC superheroes, will open in Paris's Parc de la Villette on Sunday (April 29), the latest stop on a global tour that began in 2007.

Sawaya used more than 2 million individual lego bricks to create 120 lifesize lego sculptures, including Batman and Wonder Woman. The flying Superman, alone, took two weeks to create.

"I'm in my Los Angeles studio, where I have millions of bricks, and I'll design something by sketching it out, getting that idea, and then brick by brick I put it together," Sawaya said.

The 5.5 metre-long Batmobile, parked inside an intricately designed batcave, was shaped with 500,000 bricks - the largest scuplture in the show.

Working mostly alone, Sawaya also recreated vintage covers of DC favorites such as Flash and the Green Lantern, and busts of the popular characters.

After abandoning the corporate world, Sawaya said he wished to invest his time instead on something that everyone can relate to, and to elevate the simple Lego brick to a sophisticated art form.

"I wasn't happy as a lawyer. And creating art made me happy. And using Lego bricks made the art very accessible," he said.

Having already toured Sydney, London, and Rome with varying themes, the "Art of the Brick" will be shown in Paris until August 19.
