Poland stores remain shut as Sunday trading ban comes into effect

A new law restricting Sunday trading kept most of the stores across Poland shut for the first time on March 11, causing inconvenience to many residents and store owners.

On January 30, Polish President Andrzej Duda signed a bill to restrict Sunday trading in the country, under which stores may only open on the first and last Sundays of a month.

The restrictions will further tighten by January 1, 2019, with stores remaining open only on the last Sunday of the month. By the first day of 2020 stores may only remain open on seven selected Sundays in a year, including two before Christmas, one before Easter and the last Sundays of January, April, June and August.

The law, however, does exclude 32 types of stores such as shops in airports and train stations, gas stations, post office, pharmacies and online shopping sites. Small shop owners may decide on their own whether to open, given that they are not using employees on restricted Sundays.
