Filipino social workers distributed free face masks to evacuees on Tuesday (January 30) as Mount Mayon erupted anew and covered nearby towns with ash.

Residents were told to wear face masks to avoid inhaling ash and toxic volcanic material. The face masks were donated by an NGO which shipped them from Manila.

Social workers said there were not enough masks for everyone and that those who did not get a mask were advised to use a wet towel as an alternative.

Philippines' most active volcano has been spewing lava and plumes of ash as high as 5 km (3.1 miles) for two weeks since its alert level was raised to a notch below a maximum of five.
