U.S. maintains duty-free trade regime for Uzbekistan

In early November this year, the Office of the United States Trade Representative announced its decision to stop the practice of hearings, which considered the applicability of the General System of Preferences (GSP) in relation to Uzbekistan.

The GSP is a duty-free regime for the importation of goods into the United States under the trade Act of 1974 for imports from developing countries. Uzbekistan was granted GSP beneficiary status (the right to duty-free deliveries to the United States) in August 1994.

In November 2018, the Embassy of Uzbekistan in the United States participated in the hearings initiated by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative on petitions of two non-governmental organizations "International Labor Rights Forum" (ILRF) and "International Intellectual Property Alliance" (IIPA). The petitions, citing violations of labor rights and the lack of adequate protection of intellectual property rights, called for the termination of the GSP regime against Uzbekistan.

As a result of consideration of the arguments of the parties and the submitted materials, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative decided to maintain the application of duty-free trade regime against Uzbekistan and close the hearings on the issue of intellectual property.
