Egypt Sends Affordable Hepatitis Drugs to Uzbekistan

The sixth batch of anti-hepatitis C drugs from Egypt arrived in Uzbekistan on February 25, consisting of 6,720 pieces of "Sofosbuvir-400" drugs in 12 boxes. The Scientific Research Institute of Virology under the Ministry of Health will distribute these drugs to patients.

An agreement was reached to provide 800,000 units of Daclatasvir and Sofosbuvir against Hepatitis C, as well as Entecavir against Hepatitis B until 2025, with a total cost of 4.2 million dollars. In 2023, drugs worth $696,000 were sent to Uzbekistan in stages.

Experts estimate that a full 3-month course of treatment for one patient requires 3 packs of "Daclatasvir" and 3 packs of "Sofosbuvir." The average price for this course of treatment in Egypt is $31, compared to an estimated $100 in Uzbekistan until this year.

The 800,000 pieces of medicine provided by the Egyptian government will benefit a total of 133,000 patients. If these drugs were purchased at current international prices, Uzbekistan would have spent $13.3 million from the state budget. The saved funds are expected to increase population screening for hepatitis from 10,000 to 1 million, aiding in the complete eradication of the disease.
