Mandatory medical examinations introduced for detainees

The Senate has approved a law requiring mandatory medical examinations for individuals before placement in pre-trial detention. The measure aims to prevent torture, inhumane treatment, and ensure detainees’ health conditions are properly assessed.

Lawmakers emphasized that the law is designed to prevent the use of torture, cruel or degrading treatment, and to detect infectious diseases in detainees. The legislation also mandates immediate reporting to the prosecutor if injuries or physical harm are identified during the medical examination.

The medical examination will be conducted free of charge, and detainees, as well as their lawyers upon request, will receive a copy of the examination report. If a detainee is a woman, the examination will be conducted by a female medical professional.

The law is expected to strengthen human rights protections in detention facilities. Following discussions, senators approved the legislation.
