According to Ahmadjon Mirzaev, Director of the sports club “Bogatyr”, Muay Thai is rapidly gaining popularity throughout Uzbekistan. In March of this year our athletes traveled to Bangkok and attended the WBF World Muay Thai Championship. With 9 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals our team rose to the highest top of the podium. In July, there was another trip to Georgia, where our athletes won 7 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze.
The competition was held under the theme: “We against drugs!”
Muay Thai appeared in Uzbekistan in May 1993. After a year, Tashkent held the first national tournament, which was attended by about 60 athletes. In December of the same year, six of our athletes took part in the first World Cup of Muay Thai, which saw athletes from 20 countries. According to the results, four Uzbek athletes won prizes.
