Uzbekistan shines at OTP Group Tashkent Grand Slam 2025
The OTP Group Tashkent Grand Slam 2025, a major judo event, took place from February 28 to March 2 in the capital. This tournament attracted top judo athletes from around the world, marking the beginning of a new Olympic cycle leading up to the Los Angeles 2028 Games. Over three days of intense competition, athletes from 23 countries across Asia, Europe, and Panamerica showcased their skills.
The host nation, Uzbekistan, delivered an impressive performance, securing a total of 12 medals. Uzbekistan's standout performance included gold medal from Shakhzodxuja Sharipov. His success contributed to Uzbekistan's second-place finish in the team standings, just behind Japan.
The tournament also highlighted the emergence of new talents who defeated top-ranked opponents, signaling a promising future for judo. Names like Xinran Niu (China, +78 kg), Bekmurodov (Uzbekistan, -66 kg), Shakhzodxuja Sharipov (Uzbekistan, -90 kg), and Karina Efimova (IJF, -52 kg) made a significant impact.
