Uzbekistan urges Facebook, Google, Telegram and TikTok move their servers inside country

Uzbekistan has obliged social networks and global Internet companies to process the personal data of citizens of Uzbekistan on servers located on the territory of the country. They have already been sent the relevant letters, the press service of the Lower House of the Oliy Majlis has reported.

It added that companies such as Facebook, Google, Mail.ru, Microsoft Skype, Telegram, Wechat Tencent, TikTok, Twitter, Yandex, when processing personal data of Uzbek citizens, are required to ensure their collection, filing and archiving of technical servers that are physically located on the territory of the country.

This means that if social networks and Internet companies intend to conduct legal activities in Uzbekistan, they must place their equipment on the territory of Uzbekistan, or in accordance with the established procedure, they can be brought to administrative or criminal responsibility.

These norms, according to the legislation, aim at ensuring the personal rights and freedoms of citizens guaranteed by the Constitution. They could also protect personal data of Uzbek citizens from cyber attacks.
