Warning issued for Uzbeks traveling to Turkiye
The Consulate General of Uzbekistan in Istanbul has warned Uzbek travelers about a serious risk at airports. During flights between Turkiye and Uzbekistan, some individuals may ask you to transport their luggage, using various excuses such as having a seriously ill relative or being unable to send the luggage themselves. However, do not believe such requests and never accept someone else's luggage.
In recent years, several Uzbek citizens have been arrested for unknowingly carrying illegal items, including drugs and forged documents:
- In 2023, at Istanbul Airport, a 27-year-old Uzbek citizen agreed to transport luggage for an unknown person. During border checks, authorities found a large quantity of drugs inside. As a result, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
- In 2022, another Uzbek citizen returning from Antalya to Tashkent agreed to take a stranger's luggage. The bag contained a fake passport and illegal documents, leading to a prison sentence of several years.
“Never accept luggage from strangers under any circumstances. Trusting unknown people can lead to serious criminal consequences. Stay alert, avoid suspicious requests, and protect yourself,” the message warns.
