Universities of USA and Uzbekistan aim to cooperate
Vice-rector of the University of Geological Sciences Obidjon Kodyrov held talks in the online format with a rector of the Institute of Mining and Technology of New Mexico, Stephen Wells. The parties reached an agreement to sign a joint memorandum defining specific areas of further cooperation and mechanisms for their implementation. In addition, the leadership of the American university expressed its readiness to allocate substantial discounts for the training of Uzbek youth in bachelor's and master's degrees, as well as to provide grants for students from Uzbekistan who intend to obtain a Ph.D. degree. They plan to create internships of the teaching staff of the domestic university in the USA with the assistance of the El-Yurt Umidi Foundation, joint scientific, practical, and field research of students and teachers of the two universities both in Uzbekistan and in the state of New Mexico.
According to Vice-Rector Obidjon Kadyrov, the creation of the University of Geological Sciences based on multidirectional research institutes gave a high scientific potential, and attracted leading representatives of fundamental, applied geological sciences in a single educational process. Currently, more than 700 students study there. University expects 3000 students in near future.
In turn, Rector Stephen Wells said that the decision of the Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to create a University of Geological Sciences is very wise and timely, and will serve to train the most sought-after specialists for the qualitative development of one of the most important sectors of the economy.
Founded in 1889, the Institute of Mining and Technology of New Mexico is the best university in the state in the field of science, technology, engineering, and mining and is ranked among the 50 leading public universities in the United States. Its graduates are highly in demand of the labor market – most of them receive an offer for employment or continue their doctoral studies immediately after receiving diplomas. Students from 30 countries of the world study at the university. The list of countries includes Brazil, China, India, Iran, Mexico, Norway, and the Philippines. Special attention is paid to conducting in-depth research. More than $75 million is allocated annually for these purposes. The test cities and landfills are located on an area of 100 square kilometers. Cutting-edge research is conducted in 10 research centers.
